URBAN DESIGN + ECOLOGY
URBAN AQUA FOREST,
NEW MUMBAI
2016
Size: 480 Acre site
Environmental Technology: Soil Erosion Control, Rainwater Storage, Groundwater Regeneration, Forest Ecology Strengthening
Apostrophe Team: Shivjit Sidhu (Principal Architect), Supriya Patil
FOCUS OF PROJECT:
Pushpak Smart City, planned by Apostrophe A+uD for CIDCO, has steep hills on the East and South-East perimeter of the site. These hills channel a tremendous amount of water during the Monsoon season into the Smart City. CIDCO wanted an ecological solution rather than treating the same as typical storm water which will be a tremendous load on the system.
SITE DESCRIPTION:
The hill slopes are part of the Sahyadri range which has a rich bio-diversity. The site impact zone starts on top of the hills and leads down to the plains.
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN:
Apostrophe A+uD proposed the creating of an Urban Aqua Forest at the site. This would function in several ways in synchronicity with the Smart City;
-
Protection against soil erosion and mud slides at the edge of Pushpak Smart City
-
Creation of a 480 acre protected landscape
-
Storm Water Drains Infrastructure is more efficient and drastically more economical as it does not need to be designed for peak capacity
-
Growth of Natural Forest promotes the natural ecology of region
-
Sports and recreation facilities are embedded in the design
-
Area is protected from illegal encroachment
